Prysmian Supports 2019 SPARKS UK Apprentice of The Year
The electrical and wider engineering sectors are booming, bringing new opportunities to young people all over the UK to start their career in this industry.
It’s been noticed though, that many young people need a bit more inspiration to get involved. Before Christmas we talked about the widespread concerns over the skills shortage in the sector and considered what should be done to motivate more young people to take on, and stay in the electrical engineering field.
Every year, SPARKS magazine runs a contest to demonstrate what an electrical apprentice learns on the job and showcase the talents of apprentices across the UK, aiming to inspire more young people to enter the industry.
This year, which is the 10th anniversary of the contest, we want to show our support for SPARKS and electrical apprentices all over the UK by becoming an official product sponsor for the 2019 SAPRKS UK Apprentice of the Year contest.
Regional heats started this month, and will send the SPARKS team to seven different UK regions, between January and February. The winner of each region’s heat and the highest runner-up overall scorer will go on to the grand final, which will take place at the 3M Customer Innovation Centre, Cain Road, Bracknell, RG12 8HT on [Date TBC].
With prizes worth up to £10,000 up for grabs, the apprentices will have to complete a series of practical tests that will demonstrate their skills with cables and wiring, various conduit bends, consumer units, switches and bulbs. Prysmian are providing various different cables for these challenges, which contestants will use to complete each task. All components will be tested by judges live at the end of the second day of the heat.
The UKs electrical apprentices are the professionals of the future, and the assurance that there are new, skilled and motivated people coming up to build on the legacy of the electrical industry. Prysmian wishes all 2019 SPARKS Apprentice of the Year contestants the best of luck!
